A Victorian lady wearing a locket that probably contained family photographs and a watch pendant to a bow pin.   View

A fancy hat, a lacy collar and a sentimental locket compliment her costume.

This sentimental locket and collar may have contained a photo and lock of her sweetheart's hair. She holds a carte de visite in her hand and also wears a pair of jet bracelets, one on each wrist,  and a brooch.    View

Is there a more classic piece of jewelry than a locket? Associated with the remembrance of someone special, it is a gift of love in the form of jewelry. Lockets are found in almost every jewelry catalogue no matter what the era. The styles and material from which they are made may change slightly with the fashions of the era, but their popularity continues from generation to generation. It is amazing how many different styles in which they were made.

VICTORIAN 15k and diamond locket with a blue and white enamel star centered with an oval mine cut cushion diamond. Around the star are etched roses and leaves designs and inside is a frame for one photo but no plastic cover. The locket itself 1" by 7/8", total weight is about .25 ounces. The later-added chain is marked "14k" at the clasp and is newer than the locket, it is 16" long and about .13 ounces. My favorite appraiser said this is a .10 ct diamond and the locket tests as 14-15k and looks like bloomed gold, an 1800s process where cyanide was used on karat gold to bring a better sheen to the finish. That process, which has several steps, is also called "depletion gilding".   View   View   View   #V37552  VICTORIAN rare sterling silver gilded set with a locket, collar with matching hinged bangle, each with etched and applied flower and scroll designs and a lovely beaded edge, one of the only matching sets like this I have ever seen, circa 1880. The best of the Victorian sterling sets have collars and lockets with photo fittings inside, wide decorated collars with the "Y piece in place, and perhaps hallmarks. With the "Y", they can be worn at a shorter or longer length, flexibility that many collectors enjoy. These are all made in about the 1880s, and the motif and styles were amazingly varied. Similar pieces can also be seen in the book, "Warman's Jewelry" 2nd Edition by Christie Romero on page 65, and she dates those 1880-1890.

VICTORIAN Whitby jet well carved "AEI" pendant with locket back, pendant 2" by 1-3/4", loop 1". "AEI" stands for "Amity, Eternity, Infinity", speaking of love or friendship that lasts forever. Under magnification you can see two small fleabites at the edge of the ring that holds the photo in place and the photo itself is later-added and from print media, not a vintage one. Flea bites are typical of jet of this age and these are barely noticeable except under magnification and mentioned for accuracy only as they in no way detract from this lovely piece. Jet lockets like this were popular circa 1870.

This very special piece is from the personal jet collections of Katy and Helen
Muller, authors of the books on jet jewellery.  I am so very privileged to
have it and other pieces from their private collections.  It is guaranteed to be genuine and all original Victorian Whitby jet.  Their books "Jet Jewellery &
Ornaments" and "Whitby Jet" are the best books written on the subject.  View  #V36477

PLEASE NOTE: Regretfully, it is no longer possible to respond to individual questions regarding jewelry history, identification or value, or to offer written or verbal appraisals or opinions. The demand for this kind of information is absolutely too overwhelming for one dealer to fill.
I love jewelry, but appraising and selling are two entirely different businesses, and I choose selling and research as my business.

Instead, articles are added on a regular basis to JEWEL CHAT on line Magazine, a wonderful reference for  information on many makers and styles of vintage jewelry.
