VICTORIAN JEWELRY

Victorian jewelry is as complex in it’s symbolism, sentiment and
design as the fashion, architecture and decor of the time. Worn as an
ornament, a love token or a remembrance, both the costume and fine jewelry
of the era not only completed the well-dressed lady’s attire but also denoted her position in society,
her marital status and her sense of self.

Since the Victorian era stretched over six decades, many types of jewelry
came and went in vogue. Mass production made jewelry available to the
widest number of buyers in the broadest range of designs ever seen
before in history. When it came to formal occasions, the "more is
better" theme of the Victorian era carried over into how jewelry was
worn by royalty and the aristocracy. Paintings of Queen Victoria and
other royals at state occasions show multiple brooches, swags, earrings,
bracelets and hair ornaments. But the jewelry of the everyday woman is
collectible, fascinating and a lesson in history that enchants us even
today.

VICTORIAN
15ct and garnet 2-1/2" brooch and 2" dangle
earrings with original box, 5" by 3-1/3". The workmanship
is amazing, with a different texture on the leaves and tiny balls of
gold accenting each piece and festoon chains on the brooch. To find a set like this with it’s original
box is very rare. The earrings have had a stabilizing gold bar placed
across the back years ago so they are very wearable. A wonderful boxed
set. A festoon brooch similar to
this can be seen in Benette & Mascetti’s "Understanding Jewellery" on
page 96.

VICTORIAN 15 carat
yellow gold, blue enamel and pearl hinged bangle, circa 1860. There are
six-sided asymmetrical stars on each side, outlined in blue enameling. A
lovely hand engraved design outlines both sides of the front as well as both
sides of the center element, ending at the sides by the hinge and opening
with scrolls and flowers. Gold beads tip each side of the domed front. The
condition is perfect except for a VERY shallow 1/2" straight light
depression on the back. The clasp closes firmly and easily, the pearls are
all there and have a lovely sheen and the enamel is all in place. It is a
size slightly smaller than the standard contemporary size of 7" at 6-1/2"
with a 1-1/4" wide front and 1/2" wide back.. The finish is matte or
bloomed not shiny, absolutely gorgeous. View

symbol for unending love. The center dangle

and elegant. See Bell’s "Collecting Victorian Jewelry" page 149

As an
added bonus, this lovely brooch is presented in it’s original fitted

VICTORIAN rare 10-14k Tassie
cameo portrait of "Mad" King George II (1738-1820), size 5 and 3/4" by 5/8"
along the finger. This material for making cameos was invented by James Tassie
in the late 18th century. The blue coloring at 3 o’clock on the ring is a
manufacturing color change at the time it was made since the blue color is
also under the top layer of the white cameo, seen from the side. The total
weight is about .26 ounces. Hallmarks on the band are crown, 375, tiger
face, and cursive "D" and a maker’s mark "B G". The band tests 10k, front
tests 14k, so I am thinking that the band is possibly not original
to the ring. There are no other signs that it was ever anything else but a
ring, so it is a bit of a puzzle. View

Seed pearl jewelry in this delicate style, with tiny seed pearls sewn onto a mother-of-pearl

Classically styled Grecian inspired costumes. By the time of Prince Albert’s death in

heavier.

It is interesting that seed pearls were used in different ways as the
decades progressed. In Victorian jewelry it was set in gold, onyx and jet,
where the seed pearls were often used to represented tears. It was used
again in Edwardian jewelry, often in the form of delicate crescent moons and
stars, birds in flight and lavalieres.

style purple glass pate de verre brooch in an intricate and artistic
silver 2-1/2" setting, circa 1900. The setting is fashioned so that it

The setting is just wonderful workmanship with a cross, leaves and tiny
flowers, as well as a collar she wears with a beaded edge.
