VINTAGE BAKELITE… Contemporary ARTISTS!
Ron Shultz makes some of the most charming, colorful and
interesting bakelite jewelry being crafted in the late 20th century, and with by far the best finished
as Ron’s craftsmanship wonderful. Ron started making these
wonderful pieces in the 1980s and continues on a very limited basis
today. They utilize 1930-1940s pieces of bakelite,
which they re-work, carve, laminate and paint to create their pieces. His pieces
are created one at a time by hand. Not only is he talented and creative,
but his jewelry is extremely wearable and
collectible. One of the most fun parts of having a wardrobe of Shultz bangles is the
way they can be mixed and matched to create many different looks and
moods, and to go with almost any style. If you want to have a real

The colors in an older Shultz bakelite bangle like this one have mellowed,

The MELLOWING COLORS of BAKELITE
An interesting thing to consider about Shultz
bakelite is that, since it is made of vintage 40s era bakelite, some
colors will mellow over time just as the 1940s bangles have done. While
some colors will change very little, others can change quite a bit. One
example is the popular vintage color "butterscotch" which was originally
paper white in color. Oxidization over the years changes the white to
butterscotch. It is not possible to predict exactly what the changes
might be or how long they will take, or if there will be any change at
all, but that is part of the fun! Here is an example of a Shultz chunky
dot bangle right after Ron made it

BLACK, WHITE & CREAM
An interesting thing to consider about Shultz
bakelite is that, since it is made of vintage 40s era bakelite, some
colors will mellow over time just as the older bangles have done. While
some colors will change very little, others can change quite a bit. One
example is popular vintage color "butterscotch" which was originally
paper white in color. Oxidization over the years changes the white to
butterscotch. It is not possible to predict exactly what the changes
might be or how long they will take, or if there will be any change at
all, but that is part of the fun! Here is an example of a Shultz chunky

The bangles at left and right when they were first re-made and polished by
Shultz. Because he uses all vintage genuine Bakelite or Catalin, his jewelry
will always oxidize over time, turning a white base bangle into cream and
then butterscotch. How fast it turns and how deep the end color will be
changes with different base stocks.
