Enameled Jewelry

TYPES of ENAMEL
GUILLOCHE enamel is
done by engraving a repeating decorative design on the metal, called
"engine turning". Over that a glass enamel is heated and polished to
form the final product.
CHAMPLEVE enamel is
done by creating cells or deep lines which are filled with enamel, fired
and polished.
CLOISONNE enamel is
created by forming pockets on a metal object, then filling them with
powdered glass enamel, firing and polishing. The tops of the metal cells
remain visible in the finished piece.

GEORGIAN
18 carat yellow gold 1820-1840 ring with mine cut diamond, four natural
pearls and black and white enamel, size 7-3/4. You can just barely see where it
was once engraved as a memorial inside the band. The raised design goes all
around the band in a chain-like design meeting at the front with scrolls
that hold the central rectangular element. There is loss of some of the black
enameling and wear on some of the
pearls. The diamond is approximately 0.15 carat, SI-2 clarity and I-J
color, ring total weight 5.086 grams.

EDWARDIAN Art
Nouveau18k yellow gold open face pendant watch set with a bezel set old
mine cut diamond (est. .05 ct, VS, G-1), heavily embossed with cherubs
and flowers, suspended from a watch pin of enameled griffons (or
dragons) and a crown. The pin is delicately enameled with a griffons and
crown motif and is set with a ruby (2.0mm purplish-red), five 2.0mm
pearls, one old mine cut diamond (est. .04 ct, VS, G-1), six old mine
cut diamonds (est. weight from .01 ct to .02 ct, VS, G-1) and one
central fresh water pearl (9.0mm by 7.0mm). The watch is 1" across; the
watch pin is 1" by 1". The watch case is engraved on the inside from a
father to his daughter on Christmas, "… from Father Dec. 25/1904".
The case is marked "Swiss, A.W., K14, 127911" and a squirrel hallmark.
There are no numbers or marks on the works.

ART NOUVEAU 14 karat
yellow gold polychrome enamel, pearl and diamond wreath
watch pin pendant circa 1900. There is slight enamel damage on one side,
invisible without a 10x loupe. The dog’s tooth shaped freshwater pearl
is accented by three European diamonds (total weight approx. .03 carat
each). The catch is a safety style, with roll-over closure, and the bail
swivels to be hidden when not in use.

PERKY blue bird and flowers brooch, a 2-3/4" pin
that weighs 1.58 ounces. There are two shades of blue on the bird, two
yellow flowers outlined in white, a black eye and beak and a brown
branch. It has a mid-century look but there are no marks
present to assist in dating it positively.

CHINESE Blumenthal style dragon brooch with a cloisonne ball in green,
cinnabar red, navy blue and aqua, set in gold tone and a substantial 3" by
2". It has Chinese marks on the back and a Chinese friend told me the mark
looks like 群力 qun li and that means something like "work together". Designed
by Louis C Mark for Rice Weiner, it is a well made piece in excellent
vintage condition, and heavier than some of the Asian inspired Blumenthal
pieces I have had.

RICE-WEINE LC Mark water man brooch carrying his water containers across his
shoulders, 3". Set in silver tone metal with beautiful detailed enameling,
cloisonné and glass beads, it is signed on the back "pat D 129,573", and made by
Rice-Weiner circa 1941, designer Lois C Mark. This can be seen in Brunialti’s
"American Costume Jewelry, N-Z" on page 14. Brooches like this were also made
by other companies, and many of the unsigned pins are much lower in quality and
with lighter weight metal than this one.

ROSE pink moonglow cabochons
flower brooch with clear rhinestone accents and green enameled leaves, all set in
silver tone, 3-1/4" by 1-1/4". The clear rhinestones show
some yellowing in some stones, as can be seen in the photo. Circa 1940, this
is still a fun and wearable pin.

GENUINE 1940s torch brooch, an iconic and patriotic brooch with red and
clear rhinestones and blue, red and flesh pink enamel, genuine and made
in the 1940s, 4-1/8". This is the real thing and not the later
Barnes reproduction, and I have owned both so I know the difference.
Staret was based in Chicago, Illinois, and they only made jewelry for a
brief period from about 1940-1947. This wonderful brooch is seen
in Christie Romero’s "Warman’s Jewelry", 2nd Ed, page 191, in
Brunialti’s "Tribute to America" on page 55 and in Brunialti’s "American
Costume Jewelry, Art & Industry" on page 242.

STARET rare hand holding flowers brooch, a large size at 4-1/2"
tall. It is enameled in pink, aqua, flesh, white and yellow with
sparkling clear rhinestones. There is even a ring on the finger, a
wonderful detail. Staret was based in Chicago, Illinois, and they only

NORWAY sterling enameled flowers bracelet, marked for Finn Jensen
circa 1950, 6-1/2" by 7/8", total weight 1.4 ounces. The intricate detail of
each of the different flowers is amazing and they include roses, blue bells,
wild rose and violet. This is a lovely piece of mid-century Scandinavian
jewlery and it is in excellent condition.
