Marcasite Jewelry

The MARCASITES
used in costume jewelry are pyrites, similar to Fool’s Gold, and while
they have been used in jewelry for centuries, they had a great spike in
popularity during the Victorian to the Art Nouveau eras. They have been
used both before and since, and are often but not always set in sterling
or silver
tone rather than gold tone. Some people have trouble telling cut steel from
marcasites, but it is really easy. Cut steel brads are faceted steel
brads set into a metal backing. Once you see how that looks from the
back, you will be able to distinguish the difference readily. Marcasites
can be either prong set or glued in to a setting, and the older pieces
tend to be pronged.

Marcasite jewelry is still being made today by everyone from Judith Jack
to Asian makers and some of it is really lovely. But if you want only a
vintage piece, be sure to do your homework by looking and reading, and
buy from a reputable dealer

FRENCH sterling silver,
marcasite and mother-of-pearl pearl pendant earrings that hang beautifully.
The mark is what I think is a boar’s head hallmark
(all but impossible to see so I may be wrong on this). These are hinged lever-back ear
wires for pierced ears, total length
2" and wreath width 1".

STERLING
silver figural brooch in black onyx or glass, marcasites and
925 sterling silver. On each side is a cherub like figure each with a hand
to the forehead as if looking far away out to sea, and each has waves of
marcasites below it. It’s marked with the letter "G", the
meaning of which I don’t know, and it is 3" by 2-1/4".

JAC
Jorge A Cohen, Netherlands, Art Deco style marcasite
and 835 silver bracelet, brooch and earrings with embossed and partially
frosted and embossed glass inserts, marcasites and onyx bar links, made in
about 1980. The
bracelet is 7-1/3" by 1-5/8", brooch 4" by 1-5/8", and pendant clip back
earrings 2-1/3". Other pieces by this maker can be seen in the Christie’s
Elizabeth Taylor Auction in December 2011,

HERE
. Mr. Cohen was based in Amsterdam, but has since passed away. He
was born in 1941 and died in 1993. According to Ginger Moro’s wonderful
book, "European Designer Jewelry" on page 233, Cohen found vintage molded
glass elements in Paris and combined them with modern silver, onyx,
marcasites, and chrysoprase to fashion his Deco inspired jewelry. According
to Cohen, he was also inspired by the Amsterdam School designs from earlier
in the 20th Century. This is one of the best sets I have had in the over
twenty years we have been in business!

MARCASITE brooches.

1939 Benjamin Allen Catalogue page 132.
"Radiantly beautiful marcasite monogram brooches made of non-tarnishing sterling
silver hand set with French marcasites. Some with onyx, others with hard fired
enamel, made to order. All have safety catches".

MARCASITE

single marcasite is in place even though the shadows make it look like some
are missing.
